Understanding Dyslexia

Dyslexia is the most common form of learning disability in adults and can affect as many as 1 in 4 people. Being dyslexic does not mean you will be less intelligent than a non-dyslexic person, it simply means you process information differently. Adults with dyslexia tend to experience difficulty in processing certain different types of information, whilst often in excess of in others.

2. Common Difficulties

The following list identifies everyday materials common difficulties experienced by the dyslexic adult:

?? Issue reading large blocks of unbroken text

?? Poor concentration when reading

?? Difficulty understanding written information

?? Easily distracted when reading

?? Problems with small or fancy fonts

?? Headaches and tiredness when reading

?? Poor spelling - difficulty with remembering even simple key phrases

?? Untidy handwriting

?? Really missing out words or letters

?? Mixing up words or letters

?? Difficulty remembering thoughts long enough to write down

?? Issue remembering verbal instructions

?? Trouble in giving and subsequent directions

?? Issue remembering number sequences (e. g. telephone numbers)

?? Mixing up numbers (i. g. 37 and 73)

3. Common Strengths

Adults with dyslexia can often display greater ability in areas which use a more creative head. Because the dyslexic head processes information differently, it can offer obvious advantages in the following:

3. 1 Visual Arts

Dyslexic people generally greater visual awareness and often display artistic talent. Leonardo Da Vinci is thought to have been profoundly dyslexic.

3. 2 Music

Learning how to read, write and understand new music is quite difficult for most people. Dyslexic people, however, often find music better to understand than written words. The music industry is chock full of very talented individuals who are dyslexic.

3. 3 Performing Arts

Of those with dyslexia are also drawn to the stage and screen. Some in our most respected and celebrated actors and actresses are generally dyslexic. Tom Cruise and Whoopi Goldberg are two examples and a few believe that the terrific bard, Shakespeare himself, had been also dyslexic.

3. 4 Maths and Logic

Paradoxically, whilst dyslexia can result in difficulties in remembering multitude sequences, it can offer a massive advantage within mathematical problem solving. This is because the dyslexic mind is not limited by the normal constraints in the non-dyslexic mind and is actually more flexible in its approach to problem solving. This certainly appears to be true of Albert Einstein, considered one of our most famous dyslexics.

I am not some sort of psychologist and I dont claim to be an expert but I am the parent of a teenage boy, who has been coping with dyslexia all his life.
